What is the difference between a wood shake and a wood shingle?

A wood shake is hand split on at least one face for a thick, rugged, irregular profile, while a wood shingle is machine sawn on both faces for a smoother, more uniform surface. Both are commonly Western Red Cedar and both need the same coastal maintenance in Newport Beach. The choice comes down to the look you want and your budget.

How long does a cedar shake roof last on the Newport Beach coast?

A well-chosen, well-maintained cedar roof commonly runs 25 to 40 years on the coast, with maintenance doing most of the work at the top of that range. Salt air and marine layer humidity age the wood, so annual cleaning and a preservative treatment every few years protect the higher end.

Will an HOA or insurer allow a wood shake roof in Newport Beach?

It depends. HOA communities may add roofing rules on top of the state fire code, and many California carriers now require treated assemblies or decline real wood. Confirm both before choosing cedar. Where real wood is not allowed, a Class A rated composite shake keeps the look while meeting the code and the carrier.
