Question 1

Why do I suddenly have no hot water?

Accepted Answer

On an electric unit, the usual causes are a failed heating element, a bad thermostat, or a tripped high-temperature limit switch. On a gas unit, a failed thermocouple, a dirty pilot, a faulty gas valve, or a gas-supply interruption. Each is a repairable part, so a technician tests to find which failed. Question 2

Why is my water lukewarm or running cold quickly?

Accepted Answer

On an electric water heater, water that starts warm but runs cold fast often points to a failed lower heating element, while no hot water at all can mean the upper element or a tripped limit switch. A technician tests the elements and thermostats to find the specific failure, then replaces the faulty part to restore full hot water.

Question 3

Should I try to relight my gas water heater myself?

Accepted Answer

If a gas unit will not stay lit, the cause is often a failed thermocouple or pilot problem, and repeatedly relighting it does not fix that. Because a gas unit involves fuel, combustion, and venting, a recurring failure warrants a qualified technician who can find the cause and confirm the unit is safe, rather than forcing it to run.
