What are the first signs of roof rats in a San Diego home?

Common early signs are scratching in the ceiling after dark, droppings in the garage or attic, gnaw marks on wood and wiring, grease trails on the fascia, and hollowed-out citrus or avocado on the tree. Roof rats are often established for weeks before these appear, so catching them early helps.

Should I trim my trees to keep roof rats out?

Yes. Roof rats climb, and a branch touching the roof is a direct bridge to the eaves, so trimming limbs back from the roofline removes that path. Clearing fallen fruit and securing pet food and bird seed also cuts the food that supports a colony. Trimming reduces pressure, but sealing the house is what keeps them out.

Is trapping enough, or do I need to seal the house?

Sealing is what lasts. Trapping removes the rats inside but leaves the openings, and San Diego's mild climate keeps replacements coming year-round. San Diego rodent proofing closes the eaves, vents, and foundation gaps so no new rat can follow. To schedule a free inspection with AtticGuard, call (858) 330-6197.
